Bad news if you've bought a Tottenham jersey with 'Alli 20' on the back...

The breakout star from Tottenham Hotspur's so close but so very far Premier League campaign last season was unquestionably Dele Alli. The youngster plucked from MK Dons exceeded all expectations as he became one of the leading midfielders in the league, but this year he is making a chance to the name that appears on the back of his shirt.

Similar to how Manchester United winger Memphis Depay wears just 'Memphis' on the back of his jersey, Dele Alli will now be wearing just 'Dele' as he revealed he feels no connection to the Alli name.

I wanted a name on my shirt that represented who I am and I feel I have no connection with the Alli surname

This is not a decision I have taken without a lot of thought and discussion with family close to me.

According to Sky Sports, Dele Alli's mother gave him up for adoption at the age of 13 as she battled alcoholism, while his Nigerian father is currently living in the United States having played no part in his childhood.

Dele Alli has acknowledged that he may have caused some inconvenience for fans who had already purchased the new Spurs jersey with his old name on the back, but he has offered to autograph each and every one if those fans wish to send them to him.
