UEFA Charge FA For England Fans' Behaviour At Denmark Semi-Final

UEFA Charge FA For England Fans' Behaviour At Denmark Semi-Final
By Eoin Harrington

It was a major night for England at Wembley, as they progressed to the European Championships final for the first time ever. However, their win against Denmark in the semi-finals didn't come without controversy, and UEFA are now investigating their fans for misbehaviour on Wednesday night.

The first sign of unrest came during the Danish national anthem, when the sound of the 8,000 or so singing Danish fans was drowned out by a chorus of boos from the English crowd.

This had happened at England's last 16 game against Germany, but could perhaps be explained away by the old rivalry between those two nations. The booing of the Danish anthem smacked of a lack of respect, and UEFA have taken a dim view of it.

More significantly, UEFA have charged the FA for an incident leading up to Harry Kane's winner. After the controversial awarding of a penalty for England in extra-time, tensions were running high in Wembley, with all the pressure on the Denmark keeper, Kasper Schmeichel.

As he faced down Kane, a laser pointer was shone in Schmeichel's eyes - an incident which was caught on the global TV cameras and discussed on ITV in their post-match coverage.

UEFA have charged the FA with the misbehaviour of their fans in both instances, as well as charging them for the lighting of fireworks in the Wembley crowd during Wednesday's semi-final.

The incidents in the crowd put a sad dampener on what was a thrilling night of semi-final action, but the English team were let down badly by their fans on Wednesday night.

We can only hope that they don't boo during the anthems before Sunday's final - not only for respect, but the Italian anthem is a bit of a banger and we couldn't be missing that.
