We are down to the business end of our quest to crown Ireland's Greatest Football Jersey, in association with Ladbrokes. Many great jerseys have been lost along the way but we are now left with the heavy hitters.
Today sees the launch of the semi-finals in a contest that is so hotly contested Met Éireann are considering issuing a weather warning. But before we get to the last four ties let's quickly reflect on how the quarter-finals fared. Over the last couple of days you've all been voting and the results were resounding. All of our semi-finalists overcame their opponents with considerate ease.
The 1990-92 home jersey was expected to win its match against the away kit of 2015-16 but no one was expecting it to take home 79% of the vote! In the semi-finals it will now face the home top from 2015-16, after it beat the 2001-03 home jersey 66% to 34% in its last eight tie.
In our second semi-final, the home jersey of 1988-90 will take on the 1994 away number in a match that is frankly too close to call. In the quarters, home 88-90 beat away 2011-12 with 67% of the vote while the 1994 jersey romped home against the away 2009-10 jersey with 69%.
