The Football League got underway at the weekend and there were plenty of Irish players in action.

Norwich demolished Blackburn 4-1 with Wes Hoolahan running the show.

Wes scored one and was involved in two of Norwich's other goals. Anthony Stokes got the Blackburn consolation goal on his debut for the club.

Ipswich got their season off to an excellent start with a 4-2 win against newly-promoted Barnsley. David McGoldrick got on the scoresheet from the penalty spot for Ipswich, while Daryl Murphy set up one of Grant Ward's three goals off the bench for Mick McCarthy's side.

Corkman Conor Hourihane got an equaliser for Barnsley and also assisted their second goal of the game.

Limerick's Anthony Forde pitched in with two assists for Rotherham as they drew 2-2 with Wolves.

League One

Former Ireland U21 international Aiden O'Brien hit Millwall's second goal in a 3-0 win against Oldham.

A superb strike from Chris Forrester helped Peterborough to a 3-2 win away to Rochdale.

Southend vs Gillingham - a 3-1 win for the away side - featured plenty of Irish interest. Simon Cox set up Stephen McLaughlin for Southend's goal while Dundalk's Emmanuel Osadebe hit Gillingham's third of the game.
