The term 'that escalated quickly' gets thrown around a lot these days after Ron Burgundy so famously became startled with the nature of a battle royale between San Diego news stations once upon a time, but things really did escalate quickly in Tuesday night's Champions League clash between Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warsaw.

So quickly did things escalate, that a new Champions League record was made as no fewer than seven goals were scored in the first-half, five of them in the first 25 minutes.

It all started with a sublime finish from Aleksandar Prijovic after a clear foul in the build-up went unpunished:

Before Shinji Kagawa hit back in a matter of minutes:

It was just one minute after that goal that Kagawa pounced again, putting Dortmund ahead on the night.

And just two minutes after that, the lead was extended by Nuri Sahin thanks to a goalkeeping howler.

An eternity of four minutes passed before the guy with the ponytail pulled one back for Warsaw.

And five minutes after that, Ousmane Dembele gave his side a bit of breathing room with a nice fake and finish.

Marco Reus, on return from a long injury layoff, got his name on the scoresheet after the Legia defenders decided he wasn't worth marking.

Second Half

Reus again managed to avoid all marking to bag his second.

But Legia, to their credit, didn't give up and managed to get a goal back.

And they threatened a comeback (not really) by hitting another to make it 7-4:

Then just for shits and giggles, Marco Reus bagged his hat-trick to set a new Champions League record.

So there you have it, an absolutely mental night of football in Dortmund.

Records broken, heads turned, and one hell of an entertaining football match. Legia drew 3-3 with Real Madrid earlier in the competition after they knocked Dundalk out in the qualifying stages, so at least they're making an impact and going down with a fight.
