Despite a spirited performance, Ireland fell just short in their opening group match against Australia yesterday, losing 1-0 following a Stephanie Catley penalty in the 52nd minute.
There was a fantastic Irish presence in Sydney for the match, and thankfully Stephen Byrne was there for Balls.ie and Carlsberg 0.0 to capture what was a historic day for Irish women's football.
Stephen ran us through his day, from hopping on the train, mingling with a battalion of Irish fans and ultimately documenting the game at Stadium Australia. Pre-match, there was a real feeling of pride towards the team amongst supporters, with one fan sharing:
It's just incredible, every time you go and meet them, they give so much of their time, give so much of themselves. They're just an inspiration, y'know?
