Goals change games, and United can thank Chris Smalling for leading Shrewsbury 2-0 at half-time in the FA Cup.

Manchester United began the first-half of their Cup tie with Shrewsbury huffing, puffing and being the generally blunt attacking force that Louis Van Gaal has created.

A dominance of possession was supplemented with a series of wild and inaccurate shots, as the torpor that beset the side against FC Midtjylland continued.

United spent the first half of the first half looking like they would not score, and that was summed up best of all with this Depay free-kick that looked destined for the corner:
