Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey became embroiled in controversy on Sunday night when he was pictured on social media appearing to make a Nazi salute.

In an Instagram story by teammate Max Meyer - who is German - Hennessey was spotted in the background making the gesture.

Hennessey has since offered what amounts to a weak explanation. The 31-year-old claims that he was pictured while waving his hand in the air and putting his hand over his mouth in an effort to make his voice easier to hear.

"Yesterday evening I had a meal with my team mates and we had a group photograph," the Welsh international wrote on Twitter.

"I waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it and at the same time put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry.

"It’s been brought to my attention that frozen in a moment by the camera this looks like I am making a completely inappropriate type of salute.

"I can assure everyone I would never ever do that and any resemblance to that kind of gesture is absolutely coincidental."
