All Is Not Well At West Brom As Chairman Blames Tony Pulis For Lack Of Transfer Activity

All doesn't appear to be well behind the scenes at West Brom, after club chairman John Williams hit out at manager Tony Pulis' "selective and particular" approach to player recruitment during the transfer window which, he says, cost the club some high profile signings.

Pulis added five players to his squad over the summer, with Spurs' Belgian midfielder Nacer Chadli the highest profile of the lot, but Williams maintains that the club had wanted to bring in at least two more high profile names before the window slammed shut.

The club had been working on bringing Sporting Lisbon's Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho and Malaga's Igancio Camacho to The Hawthorns but couldn't get the deals over the line in time - and it seems that Williams holds Pulis culpable for the collapse of both deals.

Our head coach Tony Pulis is very selective and particular about the players he recruits so it follows that the new team members will add significantly to his first-team options. Tony wanted five and we got five. That having been said, the one disappointment we suffered was not being able to add a further quality midfield player.

We were a long way down the road with a deal, which for the second time in the window would have broken the club transfer record, thanks to the on-going support of Jeremy Peace and Guochuan Lai.

But it was decided for footballing reasons not to pursue this. Despite it being late in the window, we decided to pursue another high-quality target. Unfortunately, we were not able to get the deal over the line. However, it does mean we can re-group if a suitable new deal presents itself in January when we will be ready to act.

West Brom were also one of the numerous clubs linked with Moussa Sissoko on deadline day before the player eventually opted for Tottenham. In addition to Chadli, The Baggies did finalise the signings of Allan Nyom and Hal Robson-Kanu but it remains to be seen if these captures will be of sufficient quality to steer West Brom away from another relegation dogfight.

Numerous bookies have made Tony Pulis the odds-on favourite to become the first Premier League manager to be given his walking papers this season and it really seems that he will have to have a stormer of a start to the season to avoid getting the chop. Time will tell.
