Zack Elbouzedi was a star of Stephen Kenny's Ireland U21 side, captaining the side on a number of occasions and scoring some big goals during their Euro qualification campaign.

His performances on the international stage helped earn a transfer at club level, with the Dubliner making the move from Waterford to Lincoln City in League One.

However, he has struggled to make an impact at the club. Elbouzedi made only seven league appearances after joining in January of 2020, eventually leaving on loan for Bolton Wanderers during the most recent winter transfer window.

He had a bit more success here, featuring 14 times in the second half of the campaign as they secured promotion from League Two.

It may have been thought that Bolton would have been a good fit for him for the upcoming season, but it looks as though the 23-year old will be taking his talents a little bit further afield.

SportExpressen are reporting that Zack Elbouzedi is set for a move to Swedish club AIK, with an announcement imminent.

Based in Stockholm, AIK are one of the most successful clubs in Swedish football with 12 league titles to their name. They are currently nine games into their summer calendar season, sitting in sixth place.

It is unclear where their interest in Elbouzedi stems from, but there is a chance that his performances against Sweden's U21s in the recent qualifying campaign were a factor.

The midfielder played a starring role in two victories over the Swedish, including a goal in the 4-1 win at Tallaght Stadium in November of 2019.

He also provided a stunning assist for Adam Idah in the same fixture.

Should this move go through, it would continue the trend of young Irish players moving to clubs on the continent in recent times.

The likes of Connor Ronan and Josh Cullen have advanced their careers during spells with European clubs.

It is something we are likely to see more of in the coming years.
