Have you ever wondered what top-level Irish sports people eat for breakfast?

No? Well, it's National Porridge Week and we can reveal to you how two of them find their oatspiration.

They may inhabit two very different sporting worlds, but, Waterford's Austin Gleeson and cyclist Nicolas Roche have shared their favourite porridge recipes.

Austin Gleeson

There is something refreshingly straight-forward about how the Mount Sion man takes his porridge. Plenty of milk, nice bit of fruit and a wee drop of honey, the full details are below.

Ingredients

  • One cup (80g) of Flahavan’s Progress Oatlets
  • 2 and a half cups (550ml) of cold water/milk.
  • Handful of strawberries
  • Handful of blueberries
  • Drizzle of honey

Method:

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat stir the milk and oats together
  2. When the porridge is cooked (3 minutes) mix in blueberries
  3. Drizzle with honey

To be fair to Gleeson, simplicity has worked in his favour here - it looks pretty great.

Nicolas Roche

An extended period on the continent - and perhaps due to his incredibly demanding profession - Roche's selection is a little more extravagant and packed with expected goodness.

Despite committing the mortal sin of including a 1:5 ratio of milk/water, it doesn't sound too bad whatsoever.

  • 1 cup semi skimmed milk
  • 5 cup water
  • Red fruit/berries
  • Handful of almonds
  • Handful of Cashew nuts
  • Tbsp chia seeds
  • Tbsp brown sugar (sprinkled on top)

Method:

  1. Stir one cup (80g) of Flahavan’s Progress Oatlets into one cup (220ml) of semi skimmed milk ring and one a half cups of cold water (330ml).
  2. Bring to the boil and simmer for 3 minutes stirring continuously.
  3. Top with nuts and berries and sprinkle with brown sugar.

Looks good!
