Limerick U21 hurler Daragh Fanning has targeted a return to hurling by the start of this year's championship after he woke up from a coma, following a terrible car accident last Monday, which shattered both his jawbones.

18-year-old Fanning - whose first cousin is The Bull Hayes - crashed into a wall and was placed in a coma, with doctors fearing he may have suffered brain damage. However, thankfully Daragh is expected to make a full recovery and is hoping to back in the Limerick colours soon, to help defend the Munster U21 title his county won last year.

Daragh's father told the Limerick Leader:

He is tough. He actually looked to get up this morning, he got out of bed and he sat out on the chair. He said he was ‘sick from lying on the bed.

He is writing and texting and says he hopes to be back for the first round of the championship.

Indeed it's not the first time Daragh or his siblings have defied the odds. Both he and his brother Brian contracted meningitis when they were six but made a full recovery. His 20-year-old sister Aoife was born weighing just 760 grams and survived a near death fall from her pony when she was 13.

Turns out John Hayes is far from the toughest member of his family.
