Less than a week after scoring 11 points as Waterford became Allianz Hurling League champions, Pauric Mahony has apparently suffered a serious leg injury while playing for his club side Ballygunner.

According to freelance journalist Tomás McCarthy, the 22-year-old was taken from the field by ambulance.

Ballygunner were playing Ballyduff Upper in the first round of the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship.

The 22-year-old's free taking accuracy has been a key factor in Waterford's recent revival under Derek McGrath. This injury is a huge blow just four weeks away from their Munster Championship opener against Cork.
