I would certainly have done what Aidan O'Shea did to keep my county in the championship.

That was the message from Alan Brogan in today's papers. The comparison's to Cristanio Ronaldo and the backlash is rubbish says Brogan.

O'Shea did what he needed to to win.

It's an illuminating column from Brogan. He talks about what it takes to win, and it's no surprise that Brogan and O'Shea are/were two big names of very good sides. That's what it takes.

As for being embarrassed at Mayo training? A load of nonsense, says Brogan. Not one person will have cared - they got the penalty.

Brogan's problem is with the level of abuse that O'Shea got:

I met Ciaran Whelan for lunch on Wednesday and he told me how he had typed O'Shea's name into twitter search and the abuse that came up on the results was shocking. I repeated the exercise that night and was equally horrified. Frankly, I'm a lot more worried about the online abuse than I am about the dive.

It is something that is creeping into the game. We saw what happened to the Cork U21 goalkeeper earlier this year, and there is no place for it.

But Brogan says it might work for Mayo. It can give them the siege mentality to end the hurt. That was the type of game to give Mayo a kick up the ass to go on to bigger things.

Will it work?
