Twenty-five years ago, John Paul II had the most significant meeting of his papacy when he met Mick Byrne, Jack Charlton and the Irish football team.

A quarter of a century later, the reverberations are still being felt. All subsequent popes (well, two) have lived under that shadow as a result.

Well today, Pope Francis has stepped out from under his shadow.

Today, the Lazio Gaelic Football team met with the Holy Father and presented him with an O'Neill's football. A truly historic event. If this doesn't save the Catholic Church in this country, then nothing will.
