Austin Gleeson scored a superb solo goal as his Mount Sion team defeated Abbeyside 2-26 to 0-15 in their opening game of the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship on Sunday.

There were just over 10 minutes to play in the second half when Gleeson took possession near the sideline at Fraher Field. He evaded the challenges of two Abbeyside players before haring towards goal and striking the sliotar past Aaron Beresford.

The goal put Mount Sion 17 points ahead. In all, the 2016 Hurler of the Year scored 1-9, with 1-5 of his total coming from play.

"He's a phenomenal player," Mount Sion selector Jim Greene told WLR FM.

"You saw him today, he gave an exhibition at times. We're so glad he's ours."

Austin was not the only Gleeson to find the net in the game. His younger brother Jamie, scorer of 1-2, saw the green flag raised moments into the second half.

Mount Sion play Tallow in their second game of Group B of the Waterford Hurling Championship this coming weekend.

Last year, Mount Sion reached the semi-final of the Waterford championship, losing out to eventual title winners - and All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Champions - Ballygunner by just two points.

Ballygunner opened their title defence on Saturday with a 1-19 to 1-7 victory over Passage. They are aiming to win a ninth consecutive Waterford title.
