Less than two weeks after returning to Aussie Rules action after a nearly year out due to a knee injury, Louth man Ciaran Byrne has been given a contract extension by the Carlton Blues.
Last July, Byrne sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate and lateral ligament in his right knee. It was a major blow to a young player just 12 games into his AFL career.

Carlton head of football Andrew McKay said that the 22-year-old had fully committed to rehab following the injury.
Ciaran has been meticulous with his commitment to rehab following his ACL injury last year and we are delighted that he is now back playing football. I'm sure he will be back in the senior side before too long.
The new contract will keep Byrne at the club until at least 2019.
Byrne moved to the Melbourne club in 2014 and went on to make his debut the following year.
His move to Australia came a year after playing senior Championship football for Louth and also in two International Rules games for Ireland.
