15 years on from being named Hurler of the Year, Dan Shanahan is still making an impact for Lismore in the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship.

Shanahan - who made his senior hurling debut for Lismore in 1993 - came off the bench for the club at half-time in their opening Waterford SHC group stage game against Roanmore on Sunday. Lismore trailed by five points at the time.

Standing at the edge of the square, Shanahan caused some havoc, and scored a point after a shot from Jack Prendergast dropped short.

He also won a penalty and assisted a point for Oisín O'Gorman.

Roanmore won the game 2-20 to 0-19.

Lismore manager Peter Queally told WLR FM that Shanahan was called upon "because they were in trouble with injuries".

"No better man to put on the Lismore jersey and go out and give it his all," he said.

"He's had plenty of battles with Frank McGrath before. I'd like to think that there's one or two more battles left in him. He is a great club man and a great warrior. He single-handedly threw things into disarray on the edge of the square."

Shanahan said two years ago that he still loves being involved with Lismore.

"I love my club, I love where I come from," he said.

"If I thought I didn’t have something offer, I would step back and play junior or retire. I do think I have something to offer.

"I love training, I’ve always loved training. It clears the head, it gets my body right, keeps me in some bit of shape."
