Donal Óg Cusack and Joanne Cantwell had an incredibly intense discussion surrounding comments the former Cork goalkeeper made about Tailteann Cup on 'Morning Ireland' recently.

The Munster senior hurling championship gets the national broadcaster's attention this afternoon however there is a number of other games taking place including the Tailteann Cup round two clash between Tipperary and Down at Semple Stadium.

With the RTÉ panel in situ at the venue ahead of Tipperary's crucial meeting with Limerick in the provincial hurling championship later, Cantwell took the opportunity to bring up Cusack's recent remarks in which he described the Tailteann Cup as "a sort of Gaelic football Grand National for disappointed also rans."

"You've been waiting for weeks to talk about live hurling and the first question I'm going to put to you is about football," Cantwell said to Cusack.

"You went on 'Morning Ireland' just over a week ago and made these disparaging remarks about the Tailteann Cup. Why would you do that?"

Donal Óg Cusack and Joanne Cantwell exchange in full

The following tense exchange took place:

Cusack: So we're here to talk about hurling and now we're talking about Gaelic football.

Cantwell: Yes.

Cusack: Did you hear the programme?

Cantwell: I did yeah.

Cusack: Do you listen to it every week?

Cantwell: Yeah.

Cusack: What's the premise of it?

Cantwell: What's the premise of it? Hurling Nation. You came out and decided to talk about the Tailteann Cup and describe it as a 'grand national for also rans'. Why would you do that?..

Cusack: You're asking me what I said. First of all we're here to talk about one of the best hurling days now that we have. You can listen to me every Friday if you want I'm on just after half past seven. So you're asking me a question about what I actually said, I'm explaining to you what I said...

Cantwell: Well you said its a grand national for also-rans. You said are they happy...

Cusack: That's not exactly what I said.

Cantwell: "It is...

Cusack: Joanne, we're here to talk about hurling and the next time you come asking me the questions make sure you quote me correctly.

Cantwell: Well tell us the quote. Was it not a grand national for also-rans?

Cusack: You started it. You didn't quote me correctly, let's talk about hurling.

Feisty words from Donal Óg Cusack to finish what was a tense three minutes of TV.

The comments made by the Cork native about Gaelic football's secondary competition have not gone down well, although this exchange would suggest that he is unlikely to change his opinion on the matter any time soon.
