Con O'Callaghan gave Dublin the perfect start, to which Mayo have responded as they usually do: they have ground their way back into the game, and lead by a point at the end of a frenzied, haggard first half of football. Referee Joe McQuillan has not been shy about dishing out yellow cards: Lee Keegan, James McCarthy, John Small, and Paul Mannion have all been booked.

Eoghan O'Gara is not among those shown cards, but he may be fortunate not to be. Late in the first-half, he lost a 50-50 ball with Colm Boyle and reacted angrily, thrusting his fingers toward Boyle's face.

Boyle was fine, and the referee waved play on.

O'Gara was a late replacement for Niall Scully before throw-in, and kicked one point from play prior to this incident before the break.
