Contrary to what had been expected in light of the decision reached by Central Council on Saturday afternoon, the trial playing rules for Gaelic football may not actually make it as far as the Allianz National League.
Releasing a joint-statement this evening, the GAA and GPA confirmed that the rule-changes will come into effect for the upcoming Provincial pre-season competitions.
What is to happen beyond this, however, is a matter for further discussion.
At a meeting in Croke Park earlier today, GAA President John Horan and GPA CEO Paul Flynn were in attendance as the latter body sought clarity on the introduction of the new rules.
Coming out of the blue somewhat, there is now no guarantee that the trialed changes will be a feature of the 2019 Allianz National Leagues.
Taking on board how the trialed rules are embraced during the Provincial pre-season competitions, the GAA confirmed that an opportunity to review the proposals ahead of the Allianz Leagues will become available at the next scheduled meeting of Ard Chomhairle on January 19.
Furthermore, the GPA have stated that they will continue to communicate with the Standing Committee on the Playing Rules between now and January.
