Imagine my dismay when I went looking for the GAA Twitter account today and accidentally clicked on @Official_GAA as opposed to @OfficialGAA.

This is what I came across:

offical

Mother of God! A very odd spambot. A very odd spambot indeed.

Intrigued and confused, I decided to delve deeper into the realms of Twitter, with my investigative journalist hat firmly in place. Little did I know, I had opened up a can of Twitter GAA spambot worms that went way beyond the Official GAA account.

There's the GAA Beo account:

And the RTÉ Sport account:

And then there's also a Derry GAA one, with Joe Brolly as their profile photo.

And it likes to tweet Joe:

All in all there umpteen GAA accounts and other sports accounts that have been set up by this 'Walter Will Wawrinka.' Absolutely loads. Even Des Cahill has one.

Having unearthed this madness I now feel I'm in way over my head. Some of the tweets on these accounts are very detailed. It's not just spam links all the time. They mention the likes Mickey Harte and the aforementioned Brolly on numerous occasions.

Where and how will this end? Will this Wawrinka chap keep going until he has taken over every Twitter account in Ireland?
