Conor Cooney scored a last gasp free which saw Galway beat Kilkenny 1-24 to 3-17 in the Leinster Hurling Championship on Sunday.

Just moments earlier - with the clock just over the allotted three minutes of injury time - John Donnelly had scored an equalising goal for Kilkenny which levelled the game at 3-17 to 1-23.

However, from the next puckout, Kilkenny's Paddy Deegan was deemed by referee Colm Lyons to have committed a foul, and Cooney nailed the winning score.

Galway goalkeeper Éanna Murphy was at fault for Donnelly's goal. Speaking on RTÉ, Donal Óg Cusack praised the Galway man's reaction to conceding the goal.

"Conor Cooney, fair play to him, that was an outstanding free when the pressure was on him," said Cusack.

"Credit to Éanna Murphy. After the mistake he made... He'll be disappointed with that goal. It's always a tough one when it bounces right in front of you, but there wasn't much dramatics out of him. He turned around, picked up the ball, and saw the opportunity out here where the free man was.

"A good lesson there for goalkeepers. You often might see a bit of dramatics there, keepers might put their heads down the ground. That's a lesson to every keeper when something goes wrong - there's always a chance."
