Ger Brennan's advocacy of a No vote in the upcoming marriage referendum has certainly got the country talking this morning. Granted, both sides of the campaign hardly needly any incentive to share their views but Brennan's public declaration has certainly served to light the fire of opinion even more.

Brennan has subsequently been speaking to Pat Kenny on Newstalk this morning and he has reiterated his stance that he is in favour of the societal acceptance of gay relationships provided that doesn't affect how children are raised in Ireland, something which he says will inevitably happen should the referendum be passed.

I would 100% vote yes on extending the title of marriage to same sex civil partnerships tomorrow provided there was an amendment in this referendum that protected the rights of a child to have a relationship with their biological parents.

What will happen when we pass this referendum, if it is passed, the government and legislators will be tied in terms of the surrogacy laws which are problematic in Ireland.

Although many have commended the fact that Brennan has taken the decision to stand up for what he believes in, the fact that he is basing his argument on the issue of children, something which should be separate to this issue, is sure to cause quite a bit of consternation.
