Kildare lost to Mayo in the final round of Division 1 in the Allianz Football League on Sunday. It was a result which relegated Kildare from the top tier.

Relegation was a tough pill for Glenn Ryan to swallow. The Kildare legend in his first season as manager.

Ryan's frustration at Kildare dropping to Division 2 was on show after the game when he spoke with RTÉ reporter Siobhan Madigan. It was an interview which RTÉ presenter Jacqui Hurley called "one of the most awkward interviews I've heard here on Sunday Sport".

Glenn Ryan RTÉ interview after Kildare relegation

Siobhan Madigan: Too early to look back at the league as a whole for yourselves, but you're still in your first year in charge. How do you think you've come so far?

Glenn Ryan: How do I think we've come? Am... I'd like to think we're improving, yeah...

SM: You head into championship, you have a four-week spell now to work for championship, are you where you want to be?

GR: [Six second pause] After getting relegated, I don't think that's the question.

SM: So, where are the areas that you feel you really need to work on?

GR: There's plenty of stuff there for us to work on, and we'll go away and see where the areas are, and how we can best improve.

SM: A hugely competitive league campaign, though, you were so near to staying up, was there one game you think might have cost you more than any?

GR: It's a league, and you have to look at the games as a whole.

RTÉ presenter Darren Frehill added that he felt the questions which Siobhan Madigan asked "weren't unfair".

The 2-20 to 0-18 loss on Sunday was Kildare's fourth of the league campaign. They also lost to Donegal, Tyrone and Armagh, while they picked up wins against Dublin and Monaghan, and drew with Kerry in their opening game.
