The GAA have crossed into some new territory today by launching the Just Play app. Costing as much as Angry Birds and What's App, the Just Play app is 'the official GAA video highlights app' and puts a premium on GAA video content. The features will include a blog and highlights of matches at the following levels:

  • County
  • Club
  • U21
  • U18
  • Colleges
  • The app is been created by Nemeton, who produce TG4's GAA coverage (will there be an SBB blog? - ed.).

It's interesting that the GAA have put a pricetag on the app. So much of this content will be on youtube, the GAA site and on miscellaneous Irish sports sites anyway (ahem), so it's hard to know if this will sate the appetites of the smart phone-using diaspora. It's exciting to see the GAA doing anything at all in this space, and also a sign that the GAA is an organisation always with an eye on the bottom line. Whether their fans will actually fork over eight-nine cent for video highlights, though, remains to be seen.
