Ballina Stephenites beat out Breaffy in the Mayo Championship final at MacHale Park earlier today, in what was a low scoring and bleakly turgid affair.

The game finished 0-06 to 0-04, with only three points from play in the entire match, while none of Breaffy's starters scored from play either.

It was the lowest scoring Mayo final since 1935, and it came in for a rake of criticism online for the shocking standard of play on show, that was littered with a host of unforced errors from both sides.

Some Are Calling It The Worst Mayo County Final Ever

Joe Brolly took to Twitter to lament the match, and quoted some of the brilliant quips from Mayo GAA legend John Maughan, who was on commentary duty.

Maughan, a former Mayo manager, went as far as to call it the worst county final he had ever seen.

That’s the worst county final I’ve ever had to witness. That’s the way football has gone unfortunately.A truly terrible game of football. Let’s hope the GAA president who is here today takes urgent action. No surprise a stream of people left at half time

For Ballina, it is their 37th Mayo title, and their first in 16 years.

Aidan O'Shea and Breaffy have yet to capture their first, and the loss makes it their fifth final defeat in the last 11 years.
