The disappointment was evident on John Madden's face as he spoke to Marty Morrissey on the Croke Park pitch after the drawn 1996 All-Ireland final.

Mayo had taken a six-point lead after Ray Dempsey scored a second half goal following a mix up in the Meath defence. However, they would let it slip. The equaliser, a freak point following a speculative punt from half-back Colm Coyle, was a score where Madden felt he could have done better.

All that on Madden's mind and then someone stole the cap - which he had been wearing during the game - right off the top of his head.
