A motion to change how the Kerry football and hurling captains would be selected in future was defeated at Kerry county board committee meeting on Monday.

The Beaufort club was proposed that the captains would "be selected by the Team Management in consultation with the Chairman of the Kerry County Committee". If passed it would have been in place from 2021 onwards.

Kerry, along with Kilkenny, continue the tradition of the county champions selecting the team captain for the following year.

East Kerry, a divisional team, won the county championship in 2019 for the first time in 20 years. They selected Fossa's David Clifford while county hurling champions Causeway, winners of the title for the first time in 21 years, selected their own Bryan Murphy.

50 delegates voted in favour of the motion with 48 against. However, as it required a two thirds majority to be passed, the motion was defeated.
