Marty Morrissey has been a commentator with RTE since the 1980s, but only in the past few years, has he attracted notice as a ladies man.

This notion seemed to begin as a joke but Marty has committed so fully to the role that it is in danger of becoming received wisdom.

Whether he is acting as the quizmaster at the RTE canteen or delivering speeches at sponsorship events, he seemingly can't resist dropping in a winking aside about his reputed love of the opposite sex.

Marty, a thoroughly helpful and nice chap, appears to be locked into the role now. He's become typecast.

In recent times, he even had to deny being a ladies man, assuring readers he was devoted to his long-standing lady friend of some twenty years.

His latest story, relayed to TV Now magazine will only heighten the legend of Marty. During the 2004 Olympics In Athens, his radar for starlets was in perfect working order.

Model Cindy Crawford walked across his path and Marty made his move.

I spotted Cindy Crawford a couple of metres away. I shouted 'Cindy, Cindy, Marty Morrissey Irish television.

I didn't think she would have heard of RTE so I continued, 'We're from Ireland', and she turns and purrs 'Oh hi, I love Ireland', and kept going.

It was the worst chat up line I ever had, I never used it again.

So, Marty will not be waving his furry mic in front of women in the future. Furthermore, he denied he's even a ladies man. 'Far, from it', he assures us.
