Mikey Kiely Wins Fitzgibbon Cup Semifinal For UL With Hail Mary Goal
By Jonathan Browne

Mikey Kiely from the University of Limerick scored a crazy goal from 45 metres out at the end of extra-time to win the game for UL as they beat IT Carlow 1-27 to 2-23 to go through to the Fitzgibbon Cup final.

The game had gone to extra-time after the two sides were inseparable throughout the match. No side took a big lead as they traded point for point. It finished 2-19 to 0-25 in normal time, meaning extra time would be needed to decide a winner.

IT Carlow were looking to reach their second Fitzgibbon final in a row and looked to have the game all wrapped up as they were up by two with very little of the game left to be played.

Then UL claimed victory from the jaws of defeat when Kiely stepped up from the 45 metres line. Kiely launched the sliotar through the crowd of players and it evaded everyone to go into the top corner with the last hit of the game.

Waterford native Mikey Kiely plays his club hurling for Abbeyside-Ballinacourty and his goal last night is reminiscent of the famous goal Paul Flynn scored for Waterford in the 2004 Munster Final as they beat Cork 3-16 to 1-21 to win the Munster Championships.

UL are now in their first Fitzgibbon Cup final since 2018 and face NUI Galway yet again. The two faced each other in the Sigerson final during the week where NUIG won. If they win, Galway be the first team since UCC in 2019 to win the double.
