As preparations for the 2023 Football season get underway, it's set to be a busy season ahead for Maynooth manager Davy Burke.

Having been appointed as manager of Roscommon, Davy Burke will take charge of the side as they make their return to division one, while a challenging provincial championship awaits them in the summer.

However, the first duty Davy Burke has to take care of is the Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup, as he hopes to achieve success with Maynooth.

Maynooth face the difficult task of facing reigning champions NUI Galway next Wednesday.

Despite being only 34, Davy Burke has plenty of experience, and knows what awaits him should he fail to meet expectations with Roscommon.

Speaking at the draw of the Sigerson Cup, the Maynooth manager explained why taking charge of today's inter-county players is such a big challenge.

Oh, you are found out very quickly. The modern day players are probably the most selfish people in the world. Let’s be honest about it. They care about one thing and it’s themselves at the end of the day.

if you are not up to it they won’t be long about telling you, or they won’t be long about telling the GPA rep or the County Board man or whoever, the GPO in the college, or whatever way it works."

While this could be intimidating or stressful for some managers in the game, the new Roscommon manager is relishing the challenges ahead in the coming year.

But I think, for me, I love that. Ultimately, we all want to be held to account. If you are not good enough, move out of the way and let someone in there who is.

You turn up and prepare your team to win games and if you are not doing it, find someone else to do it. But they do, the sharing of stuff is hard. It’s quite difficult to get young lads these days to keep things in camp.

Again, if anyone has any help for me on that front I’d be all ears. It’s difficult. There’s no doubt it’s one of the biggest challenges."

The Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup is unique as some of the best young talent is on display in the biggest third level competition in the country.

However, managers across the country will be aware of Davy Burke's comments. Players will talk among themselves of different set-ups, and will quickly realise if something is wrong with in their county.
