Pat Spillane and Oisín McConville have both urged the GAA to look at making a change to the rule which allows a player sent-off in normal time to be replaced in extra-time.

During Saturday's All-Ireland club football semi-final against St Finbarr's, Kilcoo's Aidan Branagan was red carded with just seconds remaining in the match. The rules allowed Kilcoo return to their full complement of 15 players for the 20 minutes of extra-time.

"The punishment didn't feel as if it fitted the crime," Oisín McConville told RTÉ's League Sunday.

"The big thing about this is that we're trying to finish matches on the day, trying to alleviate the congestion that's in the calendar. We're seeing much more extra-time. We should now have a look at this."

Pat Spillane: 'This is wrong, and it needs rectifying'

Though yellow and red cards do not carry over into extra time, black cards do. This was an issue highlighted by Spillane.

"What's that they say about 'the law is an ass?' This is an anomaly. This is wrong, and it needs rectifying," said Spillane.

"The team that gets the black card is punished in extra-time. Go back to the Leinster senior club football semi-final between Shelmaliers of Wexford and Naas.

"With five minutes to go, Brian Stynes of Naas got a red card. In the last play of the game, Brian Malone of Shelmaliers fouled, got a black card, and Naas drew the game, so it went to extra-time.

"For almost the entire first period of extra-time, Naas were back to their full complement of 15 men while Shelmaliers had to play 10 minutes of the first period without Brian Malone.

"The second anomaly, also in the substitution rule, was in that game. It's the idea of the blood sub. There is no time limit on the blood sub.

"In that game, Naas introduced Brian Stynes as blood sub in the 29th minute, and he stayed on the pitch until he was sent off with five minutes to go, which they are legally entitled to do. Because the blood sub is allowed to stay on the field, they can bring on an extra sub."
