Paul Geaney's Penalty Definitely Should Have Been Retaken

Dublin got away with one here. The All-Ireland final is often decided by the smallest of margins, and Kerry certainly have a right to feel aggrieved at the minute.

When Kerry were awarded a penalty early in the first half of today's All-Ireland final, it had the potential to be a game changing moment. A goal for the challengers at that stage would have laid down a serious marker, but it didn't work out like that.

Geaney's shot was well saved by Stephen Cluxton, although it must be said that it was at an ideal height for a goalkeeper.

However, Cluxton was well off his line when the penalty was struck. He took two big steps off his line before it had been taken, which is against GAA rules.

According to the GAA refereeing handbook, a goalkeeper must remain on their line until the ball has been kicked:

The goalkeeper may move along his line but may not move forward until the ball is kicked. All other players must be outside the 20m line and the arc until the ball is kicked.

The penalty should have been retaken. Kerry can certainly feel hard done by, and such an obvious violation should have been picked up by the officials.

In a game of this magnitude the lack of a decision here is nowhere near good enough.
