As you surely know by now, every Thursday we elect one lucky sports star into the Terry Phelan Hall of Fame. What is the TPHOF? It's a place where the world's most underappreciated legends gather together to drink tea and reminisce about days gone by.

As we look forward to the All Ireland Hurling Championship semi-finals, this week's poll is between Joe Deane of Cork and Seánie McMahon from Co Clare.

The case for Joe Deane

1. At 5 foot 7 inches in height he typified the 'pocket-rocket' persona.

3. Dolly Parton asked if she could write a song about Joe but he was too busy hurling to pay any attention. She had to make do with naming it 'Jolene.'

4. Off the field of play, he faced down cancer and knocked it out of the park as well.

5. Cork fans loved him so much that they wrote a poem about Joe. Here is just a snippet:

'Dear Joe, your commitment and dedication was super,
We'll miss your deft touch, you were a stalwart, a trooper,

Your sharpness and wrist work were a pleasure to behold,
And as long as stories of Cork hurling are told,

You'll be up there with Christy and all of those greats,
Your name on the team sheet pulled crowds through the gates,

We'll miss you dear Rebel, oh what a joy it has been,
To witness the great skill of the wrists of Joe Deane.'

The case for Seánie McMahon

1. He is the highest scoring defender ever in the hurling championship, with 97 points.

2. In the 1995 All Ireland final between Clare and Offaly, he was playing his first game since he injured his shoulder. What does Seánie do? Straps his good shoulder because he knew the opposing players would target it then.

3. He was part of legendary defence in Clare, including Anthony Daly and Davey Fitzgerald.
