Wicklow County Board have confirmed that an investigation has begun into an on field assault of a referee at the weekend. John Keenan took charge of Baltinglass vs Stratford-Grangecon in an intermediate Championship clash in Hollywood on Saturday.

Baltinglass recorded a four point win, however, things took an ugly turn following the full time whistle. Keenan was making his way back to the dressing room when he was allegedly head-butted, leaving him with a bloody nose.

According to the Independent, this is the second unsavoury incident that the Wicklow board have had to deal with in the past week. Last weekend, Carnew Emmets vs Éire Óg Greystones in the Division 1A senior football league was abandoned by the referee minutes before the end of the game.

Both incidents will now be fully investigated.
