For the last few years, serious questions have been raised about the standard of GAA coverage on our national broadcaster.
RTÉ had the rights to game during the summer, although it felt like they weren't utilised correctly. That was especially true when it came to highlight shows, with The Sunday Game usually committing the bulk of its airtime replaying a game that was shown live on television earlier that day.
When it came to matches in featuring lesser counties or lower tier competitions, they were often lucky to be handed a 30-second highlight slot over the course of the show.
It was something that needed to change, with a big revamp coming in 2023 hopefully bringing these issues to an end.
RTÉ announce major changes to GAA coverage
RTÉ have launched a major revamp to their GAA coverage, with news hosts, pundits, and a Saturday night highlights show all part of the package.
Jacqui Hurley has been named as the new host of The Sunday Game, with the Des Cahill stepping away from the role last year.
Damian Lawlor, often part of RTÉ's pitchside coverage during live games in recent seasons, is also set to host a new Saturday night highlight show. The Saturday Game will cover whatever fixtures took place that day, easing the burden on the Sunday night offering and should result in more counties being granted significant airtime.
A number of big name pundits are also set to join their ranks. Peter Canavan (formerly of Sky Sports), Paul Flynn, Tomás Ó Sé, David Tubridy, Enda McGinley, and the recently retired Lee Keegan are joining the already established pundits such as Sean Cavanagh, Colm Cooper, and others in their Gaelic football coverage.
In hurling, Joe Canning will join up with the panel to cover the small ball.
These look like very promising changes, so it will be interesting to see how they go over the course of the championship season.
