San Francisco Paper Struggles To Cover Story About 'Irish Soccer' Player Mark McGovern

The San Francisco Weekly must have thought they were just doing a basic write-up about an everyday tragedy today when they decided to cover the incident that's left Fermanagh man Mark McGovern in a coma. They ended up getting a lesson in Irish sport. As their first tweet about the story reveals, the paper had their codes crossed in describing McGovern.

The body of the story made similar mistakes and the edited version shows the paper's bemusement at the difference between 'Irish Football' and 'Gaelic Football'.

It's a sideshow to the tragic incident we know, but an amusing one nonetheless. The story was getting picked up by soccer websites subsequently. Consider the thoughts of commenter Haggie: "Come on! This is the United States. If you use "football" it is assumed to be American football. I don't even know what sport this person was playing when he was injured. It just smacks of Euro pretentiousness..."
