Some man.

Shane Lowry is many things: major winner, craic merchant, and all-around sound man. But if you asked him to sum himself up, he might well describe himself as an Offaly man above all else.

He loves The Faithful County, with his roots well established in Clara. His father Brendan, as well as uncles Mick and Seán, were members of the 1982 All-Ireland winning, while Shane himself harboured hopes hopes of pulling on the Offaly jersey in his younger days.

While he didn't manage to follow in his father's footsteps in this regard, we heard somewhere that he has done fairly well for himself  in the golf.

Now that he had a bit of success on that front, he is getting involved with Offaly on an official level.

Shane Lowry is set to become a sponsor of Offaly GAA, with the county saying this in their official announcement:

Offaly GAA are delighted to announce that Shane Lowry, the reigning Open Champion, has pledged his support as a partner with Offaly GAA.

Offaly GAA are in the process of preparing a Strategic Plan which will have a significant focus on player development. As an elite international sportsman, Shane has offered his experience and expertise to inspire and help improve the development of our players.

Shane will also support our commercial and fundraising initiatives to help fund improvements in our underage coaching programmes and develop educational bursaries for our young players.

The people of Offaly are immensely proud of everything that Shane has achieved. He comes from a family steeped in the history of Offaly GAA and he is himself a devoted supporter of Clara GAA and Offaly GAA.

Like many other counties, Offaly GAA experienced a very difficult financial year in 2020 and the county are presently on a fundraising drive following a very successful Grand Canal Walk to support the County and Clubs.

In support of our fundraising drive to put Offaly GAA on a more sustainable financial footing, Shane has also pledged a personal annual financial contribution to Offaly GA A over the next 5 years.

The 34-year old will aid the county in their commercial and fundraising efforts, as well as improve their underage coaching structures.

This is another boost for Offaly GAA, who recently raised over €200,000 in their Grand Canal Walk fundraiser.

Lowry has been involved with the county on a few different occasions in the past, including the launch of their centre of excellence back in 2015.

Offaly will now be hoping that some of Lowry's winning touch might rub off on them in the coming years...
