It’s safe to say that the GAA Catfish story has dominated conversations in Ireland both online and offline this past week.

The 2 Johnnies published the third installment of their disturbing podcast series this week. It’s been listened to over 2 million times.

The duo had said this week that they’d been contacted by both the gardaí and TDs about the controversy. On Friday the GPA issued a statement to its members warning them of the dangers of catfishing.

"We are overwhelmed by the response and the stories that have poured in from listeners of the podcast who have been affected by this issue, and we’re grateful that we’ve been able to help shed light on something that affects men and women all across the country," the lads said during the week.

When the two men from Tipperary were named on the line-up for Friday’s GAA-themed Late Late Show, many had expected the GAA Catfish saga would dominate discussion.

The subject was mostly avoided as talk of Cahir’s win in the Tipp junior B championship was given precedence

However, before the interview ended, Patrick Kielty invited the lads back to the show to speak about the topic.

Johnny Smacks did praise the GPA for their message to players and also criticised tech companies for allowing catfishing to happen.

"We would say to people, be safe online because the social media companies need to do more.

"They’re making billions and they don't give a sh*** about people. They need to do more."

It was a bit surprising the subject didn't garner more discussion.

However perhaps the decision was made to keep the tone light given the pre-recorded interview with GAA president at the end of the programme where Jarlath Burns was asked about three different GAA controversies being dealt with in the court of law.
