The hurlers of UL continued their barnstorming run through the Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup with an impressive 4-16 to 0-19 win over IT Carlow on the grounds of WIT on Tuesday night.

The firepower that UL manager Gary Kirby has called upon this tournament is staggering. UL's XV last night boasted Clare's Tony Kelly, David Fitzgerald and Ian Galvin and Tipp's Jason Forde and John McGrath. The latter pair nearly outscored IT Carlow themselves, combining for an immense 3-9.

Pat Ryan's goal off the bench made it 3-14 to 0-15 and essentially put a close-fought contest to bed.

It was a bitter defeat for last year's finalists. DJ Carey's men knocked UL out of the competition last year at the quarterfinal stage, so UL will count last night's victory as a sort of revenge. UL have won the tournament five times in their history and will be chasing a sixth Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup on the weekend after next in Mallow against DCU. It will be a case of David and Goliath, as a UL team with at least three Celtic Crosses to their credit will take on an upstart DCU side going for their first-ever Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup.
