Defending champions University of Galway made a statement in the opening round of the Sigerson Cup with victory over Maynooth University.

In horrible conditions in Galway, Maurice Sheridan's side got off to a flying start through Cathal Donoghue after just two minutes.

While Maynooth battled to stay in touch with them, some heroic defending from University of Galway and a Patrick O'Donnell goal saw them go in with a 2-5 o 0-2 lead at the interval.

Maynooth were far more accurate in the second half and showed some resilience, but University of Galway had too much for them and had a third goal through Galway's Tomo Culhane to seal victory, with his 1-4 part of an impressive display

Sigerson Cup Round Up

Elsewhere in the Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup, Sligo's Jack Davitt was the star for ATU Sligo as his two goals helped them to an impressive 4-6 to 0-12 win over MTU Kerry.

After a strong start by the Kerry side, who lead 0-04 to 0-00 after just 12 minutes, Davitt's goal after 22 minutes changed the game completely, as the sides went in level 1-3 to 0-06 at the break.

Another Davitt goal and captain Joe Kearney in the space of four minutes suddenly gave them a six point lead.

While MTU Kerry kept in the scoreboard ticking, a goal from Aaron Kelleghan and some strong defending ensured ATU Sligo started their Sigerson Cup campaign with victory.

In Cork, University of Limerick battled past a talented UCC side to grind out a 2-7 to 0-10 win.

UCC started their Sigerson Cup strong with a three point lead after 10 minutes, before UL grew into the game, with Clare's Ciaran Downes proving vital for the.

A goal from Mayo's Connell Dempsey gave UL a 1-4 to 0- lead at the break, as their defense continued to frustrate UCC.

In a tight second half, it was UL who took their chances, with Paul Walsh's goal in the 53rd minute proing crucial to their win.

In Dublin, Technological University Dublin started their Sigerson Cup with a 1-13 to 0-9 win over ATU Galway.

In an entertaining first half that saw both sides go in level at 0-06 each, it was a second half goal that made the difference between the sides as the Dublin college started their Sigerson Cup campaign with victory.
