Mayo took on Derry at MacHale Park in Castlebar on the opening weekend of the Allianz Hurling Leagues on Sunday afternoon - and their goalkeeper, Gerald Kelly, had a special score up his sleeve for the occasion.

It was an incredible weekend, as the GAA made its eagerly-awaited return to TV screens across the country. After a long wait for intercounty action, the hurling league finally got underway on Saturday, with Mayo and Derry having to wait until Sunday for their Division 2B match.

Mayo's goalie Gerald Kelly had a fierce breeze behind him when he went to take a defensive puckout during the game and, after a quick one-two with his defender, decided to take his chances on a score.

The ball carried all the way down the pitch and, much to the surprise of all watching, sailed over the posts for a Mayo point.

It was a sensational score, and it helped Mayo on their way to a two-point win, as they eventually came out on top by 0-21 to 1-16. The point was touted by some on social media as one of the longest-distance scores ever recorded in MacHale Park.

It wasn't the only remarkable point on the opening weekend of the Allianz Leagues. Westmeath's Ciaran Doyle scored a sensational volleyed point in his side's defeat to Galway on Saturday, while defending All-Ireland champions Limerick's game with Tipperary that evening was littered with skillful scores from long range.

Mayo now go on to face neighbours Roscommon in their second league game, with throw-in at Dr Hyde Park at 2pm on Saturday - with their footballers facing Down at the same time. Derry, on the other hand, have a week's break before they face a trip to Kildare on the 23rd of May.
