Ultimately, he didn't make it on to the pitch at Croke Park yesterday but Jackie Tyrrell's battle to be fit for the All Ireland final may have been enough in itself to help to Cats to yet another title.

Tyrrell's half time speech is being credited as a possible turning point in a game which saw Galway on top in the first half but brutally suffocated in the second. Tyrrell has worked tooth and nail screw to be fit for the final after suffering a broken metatarsal.

The Kilkenny bench was as close to the action as he got but he still played a key role in the victory and later, he showed everyone just what he went through to get himself ready.
