American golfer Billy Horschel put the blame on his near collapse at the Open down to his excessive eating of high-sugar foods.

Horschel was seen to be in visible distress early on during his round, appearing as if he was about to faint.

After his first putt on the second hole, the American was seen swaying to his left after lifting his head.

And after his round, Horschel spoke to Sky Sports to explain what happened, and he put the blame down to eating some Crunchy Nut Cornflakes for his breakfast.

I feel better than I did earlier this morning (laughs).

I woke up and had a bowl of Crunch Nut Cornflakes, my breakfast over here which I love, I walked off the range and I felt dizzy. I was trying to walk straight, and my body was taking me to my right.

I didn’t know what was going on. I was really dizzy and was fortunate enough that I was able to get some bars in me earlier in the round and that took care of the situation.

Whenever my head was in that position for that long looking down and I put my head back up, I got really dizzy and didn’t have any balance.

I was trying to walk towards my golf ball and I’m getting pulled to my left. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to get through the round.

But fortunately enough, some of the bars I had in my bag took care of the situation.

Horschel, who has been sporting a West Ham bag at this week’s Open, admitted that his poor diet since coming to Europe a couple of weeks ago may have played a role in his near collapse.

He of course supports the Hammers having fallen in love with the East London club after watching Green Street while in college. Yes, you read that right...

I haven’t done a good job of eating the proper foods over here.

I’ve had a massive two weeks of cheating and had more sugar than I would have in my body, so I think it was low sugar in my body.

I’m going to make sure I lay off on the Coke, the Snickers and the Wine Gums – all the delicious food you guys have over here.”

Incredibly, however, Horschel still managed to shoot a -1 round of 69.
