Sky Sports golf analyst and commentator, Colin Montgomerie does not rank Rory McIlroy among his list of contenders for this year's US Masters, which includes, "Tiger, you’ve got Brandt Snedeker, you’ve got Louis Oosthuizen, you’ve got Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Bradley, Johnson and Rose."
When asked why Rory McIlroy had been omitted, he responded:
I don’t think he hasn’t got a chance, no. I think playing in the Texas Open this week, that’s a very positive move for him. I think it’s all just a pressure based rush to be honest to try and find something before he starts a major campaign. I think if this tournament was in June/July I would give him more of a chance but because it’s in April it has probably come a wee bit too soon for him in that his game has shown no signs of major win over the last, well really three months and I feel if this tournament was later on in the year, we’re talking US Open or British Open, then we might be talking differently.
He also believes that McIlroy should have gotten over any issue that he has had with his new clubs.
He hasn’t managed to put this to bed, put this to sleep, this club situation. It’s the same shaft as he was using before, it’s the same grips, the head weight will be the same, there’s nothing wrong with the clubs, the clubs are good. It’s like cars nowadays, there are very few bad cars made and there are very few bad clubs made, they are all very similar so at the same time I think it’s up to Rory to get that belief back again and where he was at the US PGA Championship, the last major that was played, he won by eight. So let’s hope that something can click when he arrives at the Masters.
