Leona Maguire marked a major milestone in her career in recent weeks, winning her first event on the LPGA Tour to cap off what has been a remarkable 12 months for the Cavan woman.

She put in an absolutely stunning performance in the Drive On Championship in Florida, emerging as a convincing winner to secure her maiden title. She also became the first Irishwoman to ever win an event on the tour.

One of the most successful amateurs in the history of the game, Maguire is now certainly making her mark in the pro ranks. Following her heroics in the Solheim Cup last year, her recent run of form has seen her rise to into the top 20 positions in the world rankings. You also get the sense that she is only getting started.

It has been quite the journey up to this point for the 27-year old, with One Direction star Niall Horan playing a small part in that.

Maguire is signed up to Horan's gold management company MODEST! and is in regular contact with the pop star. The Westmeath man is a huge golf enthusiast himself, although his game does not seem to have impressed his client all that much.

Leona Maguire pokes fun at Niall Horan's golf game

Appearing on The Late Late Show last night, Leona Maguire seemed to enjoy poking a bit of fun at Niall Horan's skills on the course.

He's obsessed with golf and loves the game. It's great to have him as part of my team.

He's a good golfer, he is. He's good for what he needs to be. He brings his clubs everywhere.

He is golf mad and plays all the time. It has been a couple of years since I played with him so he has definitely been working on his game.

He has about a seven or eight handicap, so he's handy enough. He can hold his own.

We played in pro-am in Galgorm a couple of years ago, so maybe there will be something in that event this summer or in the world invitational, we will have to see if he's going to play again.

A handicap of seven or eight doesn't sound too bad to us, although our standards would be a bit lower than that of Maguire's.

She soon took to Twitter to admit that Horan manages to cross talent fields better than she manages to do.

We're sure Niall Horan will be out to impress the next time he tees up alongside Leona Maguire after hearing these comments.
