It was a mixed few days for Shane Lowry at The Open.

There was a sense coming into the tournament that he was well positioned to compete at the top of the leaderboard, although he wouldn't quite manage to do so.

His start in the opening round was a tough one, finding himself +3 after the opening four holes. However, he would battle back to finish even on that round and was in a decent position after a -4 round of 68 on day two.

There were a couple of moments on day three when it looked as though he was about to make a run, nailing back-to-back eagles to shoot up the leaderboard.

Unfortunately, that would be as close as he would get to contending. The Offaly man would ultimately finish in a tie for 21st place, by no means a poor showing.

Shane Lowry has hilarious exchange with Justin Thomas

Lowry took to social media yesterday to share his highlight of the tournament, which came via his first eagle of that second round.

He soon received a reply from American star Justin Thomas, who wondered why playing alongside him for the opening two round was not his the most memorable aspect of this year's Open.

Never one to miss an opportunity, Shane Lowry couldn't resist a dig at Thomas' disastrous drive on the 18th hole during the opening round in response.

Some man.

You can watch the drive below, a shot that certainly wasn't befitting of a player currently in seventh place in the world rankings.

This wasn't the first time Lowry had poked fun at Thomas over the drive.

After the two-time major winner hit an altogether more respectable drive on the 18th during the second round, the Irishman complimented him on his improvements only to receive a rather harsh response.

Here's hoping we see these two paired together in a few more tournaments moving forward.
