Unfortunately for him, Shane Lowry was left watching last weekend's Masters like the rest of us; on the television.

Although he "really enjoyed watching it," he knew where he would rather have been. Going through the same series of emotions as various players made their play for top spot, Lowry "genuinely did feel Rory McIlroy was going to win on Sunday."

Having competed in Augusta the last three years, he was speaking to Off the Ball of his hopes to drive himself back into the mix as soon as possible.

Inescapable for anyone who was following the tournament and keeping an eye on social media however was the palpable distaste surrounding the eventual winner, Patrick Reed.

For Lowry, this was a disappointing feature of Masters Sunday:

It's disappointing that the guy has the best day of his whole life, and then people start bringing up stuff from the past.

I don't know the chap very well, but I have had some dealings with him and I've never found anything bad about him.

There are guys out there who don't have much good to say about him, [but] I just find it very disappointing that he's after having the best day of his life, winning the biggest tournament of his career, and people [are] trying to [take him down].

Referring to the scurrilous details regarding Reed's relationship with his family that people continually sought to point out, Lowry was of the opinion that his incredible performance should have taken precedence.

Regarding McIlroy, Lowry retains belief that he can eventually claim the Masters, and complete an incredibly rare career grand slam.
