Shane Lowry absolutely loved every minute of his debut at the Ryder Cup.

While the European team would come up well short against the Americans at Whistling Straits last September, the performance of the Offaly man was one of the highlights of the event. He certainly wasn't shy in letting his emotions out, with Sky Sports even apologising for his language at one stage.

He will be hoping to be part of next year's edition in Rome, something that looks likely given his current form.

Team USA will enter that one as favourites once again, although the Europeans will perhaps be given some encouragement by events in North Carolina over the last few days.

Shane Lowry encouraged by Presidents Cup competitiveness

An international team took on the Americans in the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow last week, with the hosts entering as heavy favourites for the event.

Whereas they boasted a number of the top players in terms of world rankings, the international side had quite a few relatively inexperienced names. It was expected to be an easy victory for the USA, although the two sides would ultimately play out a fairly close contest that finished 17.5-12.5.

That should offer some encouragement to Europe ahead of next year's Ryder Cup. They may well have less talent than their opponents, but that often makes little difference in team events.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews this week, Shane Lowry admitted that he was pleased to see the Presidents Cup play out the way it did.

I quite fancied the internationals to give them a go at the start of the week.

At the end of the day, we're all professional golfers. We're out on tour and at the top of the game, those internationals are the same. The Americans don't have a god-given right to go and win.

You just go out there and go at them as best you can. Hopefully you can put them under a lot of pressure and when it gets to Sunday afternoon you hole the right putts at the right time.

I believe there were certain times on Sunday where if the internationals holed a couple of putts here and there it could have been a bit different.

It was good to see them a go, to see the highlights of [Si Woo] Kim running around the place was cool. Hopefully I can be a part of that highlight reel next September.

Of course, Shane Lowry knows many members of the American team quite well having played alongside them on the PGA Tour for a number of years. In fact, he was even able to predict Justin Thomas' antics at the event ahead of time.

He will be hoping that next year's Ryder Cup will be another close tournament, with the Europeans not having lost on home soil since 1993.
